The Institute for Ecological Monitoring and Management is a targeted effort to strengthen the relationship between SDSU and the greater conservation community in Southern California and beyond.
IEMM works in collaboration with a diverse range of agencies and organizations to support science in service of monitoring and management. Our partners, affiliated organizations, and collaborators, listed below, are an integral part of our work.
AECOM
IEMM has partnered with consulting firm AECOM to provide scientific guidance and analytical support to Caltrans on transportation projects to protect wildlife connectivity through wildlife crossing infrastructure planning.
Ascent
IEMM has partnered with consulting firm Ascent to provide climate resilience services to SANDAG through data sharing, scientific guidance, analytical support, and grant proposal development.
California Department of Fish and Wildlife
IEMM and CDFW work collaboratively on a range of projects focused on science-based management and conservation of wildlife across Southern California.
California Department of Transportation
IEMM has provided scientific support to Caltrans for training and to assist with planning for wildlife connectivity and wildlife crossing infrastructure on transportation projects.
California State University, Long Beach
CSU Long Beach is among IEMM's university collaborators working to support community-led coastal resilience, cultural and prescribed fire, climate-informed restoration, and land rematriation efforts
Climate Hazards Center
The UCSB Climate Hazards Center's team of interdisciplinary scientists works with IEMM to address drought threats with a comprehensive drought preparedness and response strategy.
Climate Science Alliance
IEMM was a foundational partner of the Climate Science Alliance and Dr. Megan Jennings, IEMM's co-director, serves as a CSA advisor. Our partnership is dedicated to the communication, translation, and co-production of climate science. We work together to achieve meaningful, sustained engagement in efforts to advance climate adaptation across Southern California.
Desert Research Institute
The team at DRI works with IEMM to monitor and analyze drought-related data. Our work helps to clarify drought trends and inform management decisions and policies.
Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission
IATTC is the Eastern Pacific Ocean fisheries management organization responsible for the conservation and management of tuna and tuna -like species, associated species and their ecosystems. IEMM collaborates with IATTC on the FaCeT project.
Inter Tribal Long Term Recovery Foundation
The Foundation helps American Indian people and Tribal Nations in California affected by wildfires and other disasters recover and become resilient. They collaborate with IEMM on the Spacial Decision Support for Fire Management project.
National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration
NOAA Fisheries is responsible for the stewardship of the nation's ocean resources and their habitat. IEMM is partnered with NOAA in our research and tool developement to support climate-ready and sustainable fisheries practices.
Naval Information Warfare Center Pacific
Naval Information Warfare Center Pacific, formerly SPAWAR Systems Center Pacific, partnered with IEMM to explore the nature and extent of climate change-related effects on local biodiversity.
Ocean Conservancy
With the mission to create evidence-based solutions for a healthy ocean and the wildlife and communities that depend on it, the Ocean Conservancy is partneres with IEMM on the FaCeT project.
Sage Project
IEMM has partnered with the Sage Project at SDSU’s Center for Regional Sustainability. This alliance expands our reach to community partners and our engagement with a wider range of faculty and students in our research efforts and science translation.
San Diego Association of Governments
IEMM participates in SANDAG’s Environmental Mitigation Working Group. We have also provided scientific support to inform SANDAG's conservation planning and habitat management efforts across San Diego’s preserve network.
San Diego Management and Monitoring Program
SDMMP is an affiliated organization with which IEMM has partnered to provide monitoring, analysis, and management services to support and guide SANDAG's species, habitat, and ecosystem conservation and management efforts.
San Diego Natural History Museum
IEMM partners with The Nat to to develop guidance for strategic conservation actions such as land acquisitions, land restorations, and other habitat enhancement activities.
San Diego Foundation
As San Diego’s largest regional community foundation, the San Diego Foundation has worked with IEMM to address some of the region's most critical needs.
Scripps Institute of Oceanography
In partnership with Scripps at University of California, San Diego, IEMM has investigated the nature and extent of climate change-related effects on local biodiversity.
Southern California Association of Governments
IEMM participates in SCAG’s Natural and Farm Lands Working Group and has relied on SCAG participation in technical advisory groups we have convened. These technical groups focus on climate adaptation research efforts and solicit feedback on research objectives, data products, and adaptation strategy development.
Southern California Coastal Water Research Project
The SCCWRP is an aquatic sciences research institute that works to improve management of aquatic systems. IEMM has worked with SCCWRP to exampine the effects of climate change on local biodiversity.
Southwest Climate Adaptation Science Center
IEMM collaborates with the USGS Southwest Climate Adaptation Science Center. Together, we promote science-informed climate adaptation efforts across Southern California.
The Nature Conservancy, California Chapter
The California Chapter of TNC has collaborated with IEMM to explore the nature and extent of climate change-related effects on local biodiversity.
Tribal Working Group
IEMM collaborates with the Climate Science Alliance’s Tribal Working Group to support the efforts of our Indigenous partners. Together, we integrate traditional ecological knowledge and western science to safeguard Southern California’s Indigenous lands and cultures from the threats of climate change.
United States Forest Service
IEMM collaborates with the USFS to support outreach and engagement efforts. We're expanding partner networks for the development of a climate-informed conservation strategy to enhance resilience of Southern California’s montane forests.
United States Geological Survey
The USGS is an affiliated government agency through our work with the Southwest Climate Adaptation Science Center to promote science-informed climate adaptation efforts across Southern California.
University of California, Davis
IEMM frequently collaborates with researchers at UC Davis accross a range of projects including investigations into habitat connectivity, carbon sequestration, and Indigenous land stewardship.
